VOILA! EUROPE THEATRE FESTIVAL
9 - 22 November 2020
Calling artists and companies with a connection to Europe and something to say! We want to hear about your shows.
Voila! Europe is the annual theatre rendez-vous of European theatre makers in London. Our curated programme is a border-busting mix of multicultural, multilingual, and multidisciplinary performance.
It looks like this may be the last year that EU citizens can perform in the UK without a visa. We’re still not sure what will happen in 2021, or what exactly it will mean to lose our freedom of movement... What we do know is that Europe is not the EU: Europe is culture, language, history, landscape, and a shared identity alongside our differences, whether we are citizens of France, Croatia, Hungary, Spain, Austria… or yes, the UK. We are Europe, all of us, together. We will continue to be European.
The Voila! Festival is a place for artists to create, to connect, and to celebrate collaboration. We support individuals and companies to make a daring leap: presenting a new piece of work, touring to a new audience, or translating a play into a new language. Our previous programmes have included cross-cultural mash-ups, adaptations, bilingual comedies, devised theatre, solo performance, puppetry, clowning, circus, dance, music, stand-up, family shows, and more.
Join us for the 8th Voila! Festival taking place in London this autumn. We’ll be at The Cockpit, our original birthplace in West London, and in two performance spaces at Rich Mix in East London. There are opportunities to develop a brand new piece in residency at the festival, to perform in thrust, in the round, or end-on.
Applications will be accepted until 5th May, 2020.
At Voila! Europe, we love to see artists combining various languages, cultures, genres, and technologies. Many Voila companies already use online tools and remote rehearsals to create theatre with far-flung company members, and we know that this moment of global crisis will inspire even more artists and companies to pursue collaborations beyond borders.
Artists are going to have a lot to say when the theatres open again, and Voila will be here to provide a platform and champion European theatre makers as always. We are carrying on with the assumption that our November 2020 festival can go ahead at The Cockpit and Rich Mix, as well as exploring the possibilities of online broadcast (more details to come!).
For the moment, we want to continue our festival planning work as normal through to June, reading applications and selecting the programme. By then, we hope to have enough information to decide whether this year’s festival will take place live, online, or both.
Voila! Festival directors Sharlit and Amy will host an online Q&A to explain more about how to apply, and how we programme the festival. Please join us on Wednesday, 8th April at 3PM: click here to register on Zoom.
Applications are open through 5th of May; we can’t wait to hear your ideas.
Please read the FAQs and venue details before applying!
We recommend preparing your answers in a separate document; you will NOT be able to save your work and return to the form later. Download the application questions here.
Once you submit the form, you will receive an email from Google with a copy of your answers. You will not receive additional confirmation from the festival. We will respond to all applicants in June 2020.
