They said she couldn’t do it, but Annie, Bessie and Junko did it. From going around the world on a bicycle to doing spectacular airshows or climbing the highest mountains on earth, these women fought the prejudice and scepticism that surrounded them.
With their strength and determination they have been outstanding examples of what some called a New Woman, “if that term means that I believe I can do anything that any man can do” (Annie Londonderry). Their achievements became milestones in the path towards women’s rights and freedom, challenging the assumption that the “fairer sex” lacks the physical and mental stamina for big deeds. Their adventures were as breathtaking, spellbinding and phenomenal as their male counterparts. But where are their stories now?
In MILES APART TOGETHER Annie "Londonderry" Kopchovsky, Bessie Coleman and Junko Tabei finally step into the spotlight and get the applause they deserve. The Voila! Festival performances are a first exploration for a bigger series around female explorers.
