Running time: 60 minutes
Breathe is a hard-hitting dark comedy that pans across the struggles of four housemates living in London trying to accomplish their dreams. They represent a generation very much at odds with the world they are forced to inhabit. Personal secrets and fears emerge as their lives intertwine, revealing the importance of friendship in the face of anxiety and depression. Will they choose security or transform their fears into fuel to conquer their dreams?
This is the question on which the plot of the play is woven and the four protagonists, directed by Italian director Lucrezia Pollice, ask on stage. The audiences meet this group of young friends in their everyday lives, as they tackle varied situations, they share their experiences, their fears, their joy, their excitement, and their anxieties of realizing who truly they want to be or become.
The audiences are taken along on the journey as the protagonists incite them to reflect on their own life experiences, confidence and determination that define them. When their intimate thoughts cannot be revealed, abstract video projections take over to represent what cannot be explicitly expressed.
This is a must see show: it deals with a current subject often neglected and carefully hidden behind closed doors, but that impacts many lives, whether you are aware of it or not.
Although the play tackles serious topics, this piece of new writing is funny, bold and in your face. It is full of poetry and tender moments, inquisitive and daring, instilling an overall desire to get up from the theatre to go towards one’s dreams with full strength.
